My mom used to get plantains (seasonally) from a little produce store on Davie Street towards the beach, in the West End.
The store shut down last year, and the area was razed and rezoned for upscale condo and retail developments.
My mom’s still looking for store with a consistent supply of plantains…
I love plantains, growing up it was one of my favourite foods, I get excited every time I see plantains at the grocery store because they aren’t that common around here.
A couple of weeks ago I was getting some tea at the Urban Fare on Georgia Street when I saw that they had plantains, I chose a few not quite ripened ones, took them home and gave them a couple more days.
Traditionally we fry up ripe plantains and have them with a side of stewed beans for dinner.
This time wanting to try something different, I tossed them in a bit of olive oil and salt, and roasted them the oven.
The secret to perfect oven roasted plantains is you have to turn them occasionally while in the oven, that way it cooks through and the sides brown evenly.
You should try them sometime…
