Hips Don’t Lie

Back when I was a teenager and uncomfortable in my skin, a strange thing happened.
I woke up one day and my clothes wouldn’t fit; it happened almost overnight.
Next thing I knew I was being referred to as the ‘chubby girl’ (but not necessarily in a bad or negative way)

One day a family friend I hadn’t seen in a long time, took one look at me and declared that I had ‘child bearing hips’.
I didn’t really know exactly what ‘child bearing hips’ were then, but the way she said it, I knew I didn’t want (and shouldn’t have) child bearing hips.

Later on that night, after we’d all had dinner, the family friend called me into the room where the adults had gathered.

I stood there, and while she had everyone’s attention she reiterated her theory about my ‘child bearing hips’
After close inspection of said hips, most of the adults agreed with her.
Alone in my room that night, I cried – I was such a gentle and introverted soul back then.

Confidence, self-acceptance, positive body image… these are traits that comes with age.
And as the years have passed, I’ve not only come to accept them; I’ve grown quite fond of my ‘child bearing hips’.

Rain Rants Bring Sunny Days

Rain Stone

It looks like whenever I complain about the rain, the sun comes out the next day.
So here we go… let’s try for two days in a row.

Fri 12 Mar - 10  Fri 12 Mar - 6
Have I mentioned how miserable it gets when it rains all the time?

Fri 12 Mar - 5  Fri 12 Mar - 9
I really hate it when it rains for weeks on end.

Fri 12 Mar - 3  Fri 12 Mar - 1

I don’t want to wear these rain boots again for a long time.

I Heard There Was A Secret Chord

Aquabus

So, Today is a wash. Another wet and dreary day wasted pining for sunshine.
I keep reminding myself that it would be spectacular once the sun finally shines.
It’s like an affirmation I repeat to myself over and over.
The sun did come out, towards the end of the day and only briefly, for about 30 minutes.
It seem like an unusual day, so I did unusual things; I made a batch of oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies.
I set my camera and tripod on balcony and made a video of flowery trees dancing in the blustering wind.
I think we may have an art piece on our hands.
I capped off the day by listening to Leonard Cohen’s ‘Live in London’ which is simply amazing.
I’m going to bed now… to dream of the sea… sunshine… and songs of melancholy.
Goodnight!

Rainy Days & Mondays

I’m getting increasingly jealous of other people’s snow pictures.

Are we the only region in these parts of the world not hit by snow storm?

It’s ridiculously warm for the season.

I was out and about on Saturday and I was ok without a coat, all I needed was a scarf for a wrap.

It’s currently 11°C (52°F) and of course, it’s raining.

I’m wearing my trusty old camper boots; I’ve had them for over three years and they still do very well in the rain.

It’s dark and gloomy and grey, the kind of day that requires a little infusion of colour to get you going.

RED. I don’t wear enough red.

Dark cold rainy days are best endured with playful smiles and red flowery skirts.

Rain Ready

Hang Umbrella

It hasn’t rained in a while… I’m not complaining, it’s been absolutely wonderful.

Yesterday I stood in the blistering cold to catch a glimpse of Santa at the parade,

It was so cold and windy that folks, especially families with small children left halfway through, but the general consensus was “at least it not raining”

Yes, we do get a lot of rain here and we talk about the weather just as much.

I was a tad anxious about the rain when I decided to move here, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I’d read a lot about the rain, I’d heard people call the city Raincouver.

Someone said living here was like living in a tropical rainforest without the tropics.

I got an umbrella the first day I got here and it rained the next day.

I imagined I’d need a rain coat.

I went to several stores but couldn’t seem to find a raincoat; I was looking for colourful ones like I used to wear when I was little.

I got laughed out of several stores; no one sold raincoats and couldn’t understand why I’d want one.

An elderly shopkeeper finally took pity on me and said,

“Honey, hardly anyone wears raincoats here, just get a good umbrella, a good pair of waterproof boots and maybe a water repellent coat”.

And that’s exactly what I did, and I’ve been rain ready ever since.

Rain Boots & Umbrella E

As someone said, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.

I finally got rain boots this year, which I’m enjoying very much.

I thought I was going to have to wear them forever when we got over twenty-three days of rain last month.
