Rainy Days & Mondays

I’m getting increasingly jealous of other people’s snow pictures.

Are we the only region in these parts of the world not hit by snow storm?

It’s ridiculously warm for the season.

I was out and about on Saturday and I was ok without a coat, all I needed was a scarf for a wrap.

It’s currently 11°C (52°F) and of course, it’s raining.

I’m wearing my trusty old camper boots; I’ve had them for over three years and they still do very well in the rain.

It’s dark and gloomy and grey, the kind of day that requires a little infusion of colour to get you going.

RED. I don’t wear enough red.

Dark cold rainy days are best endured with playful smiles and red flowery skirts.

Rain Ready

Hang Umbrella

It hasn’t rained in a while… I’m not complaining, it’s been absolutely wonderful.

Yesterday I stood in the blistering cold to catch a glimpse of Santa at the parade,

It was so cold and windy that folks, especially families with small children left halfway through, but the general consensus was “at least it not raining”

Yes, we do get a lot of rain here and we talk about the weather just as much.

I was a tad anxious about the rain when I decided to move here, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I’d read a lot about the rain, I’d heard people call the city Raincouver.

Someone said living here was like living in a tropical rainforest without the tropics.

I got an umbrella the first day I got here and it rained the next day.

I imagined I’d need a rain coat.

I went to several stores but couldn’t seem to find a raincoat; I was looking for colourful ones like I used to wear when I was little.

I got laughed out of several stores; no one sold raincoats and couldn’t understand why I’d want one.

An elderly shopkeeper finally took pity on me and said,

“Honey, hardly anyone wears raincoats here, just get a good umbrella, a good pair of waterproof boots and maybe a water repellent coat”.

And that’s exactly what I did, and I’ve been rain ready ever since.

Rain Boots & Umbrella E

As someone said, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.

I finally got rain boots this year, which I’m enjoying very much.

I thought I was going to have to wear them forever when we got over twenty-three days of rain last month.

Under the cover of rain

Someone sent me a CD of ‘Rain’ songs. I hate songs that romanticize rain – these people obviously have never lived in a place where it actually rains. I like songs where rain is used as a metaphor for life’s struggles. Rainy day on Water Street

The rain’s been getting to me lately; I daydream about the sun – wondering what it’ll be like to go a whole two weeks without rain. I don’t remember how that feels like anymore.

My umbrella needed repair recently and was surprised to find there weren’t any umbrella repair shops in this city. Ordinarily I wouldn’t repair an umbrella, but this is a large, sturdy, beautiful and colourful one that reminds me of sunshine and pink cotton candy.

The fabric had come unhinged at the tip, it seemed a shame to throw away – if I were any good with the needle and thread I could sew it myself, but I suck.

I Googled umbrella repair and it seems umbrellas are only repaired in cities like London and Sydney; the shoe-repair shop had me believing this too. The nice gentleman said there were no umbrella repair shops in Vancouver, he said to chuck it and just get another one, and then went on to tell me about his great adventures in Kenya and Abidjan.

But he lied (about there being no umbrella repair shops in Vancouver, I have no reason to disbelieve his African adventures). I found the aptly named Umbrella shop; they make custom umbrellas and repair them too.

I called them and was instantly informed that they don’t do “designer” umbrellas. Well, it’s not like it’s some $1,000.00 limited-edition leather umbrella, it’s a Coach (which is not considered designer in some circles) Scarf Print Stick umbrella and it just needs a sew job, I tell her.Just like my brolly except mine is more colourful!

I take it in for inspection and they decide they’d sew it for $8.00; I get a work order ticket and leave. This was a week before Christmas; they said it was a busy time so not to call them; they’ll call me when it’s ready. It’s the 8th of January and I’m still waiting, in the mean time, it’s still raining – now more so than ever, it’ll seem.
