Les Femmes sont des Personnes

I had an uninspiring weekend, but the kind that usually feels one with keenness for the coming week.

I babysat my favourite little tykes, so their parents could go catch Alice in Wonderland in 3D.

My mom can’t understand why the kids can’t see Alice in Wonderland with their parents “It’s a creative children’s story, it stimulates kids imagination”

I explain that this version might be a little dark for kids “Of course it’s dark… your sister used to be afraid of it”

True, but my sister is afraid of anything animated, Coraline freaks the hell out of her; she thinks it’s creepy.

My mom insists that we tell the kids the story of Alice in Wonderland; we end up with a re-enactment of sorts.

The kids especially love the Duchess and the Cook bit; I swing the little one dramatically in my arms while singing…

Speak roughly to your little boy
and beat him when he sneezes
he only does it to annoy
because he knows it teases.
Wow… Wow… Wow…

While the older boy runs around screaming “More Pepper! More Pepper!”

It’s totally hilarious and chaotic – I almost doubt they’d have had that much fun at the theatre.

I also made banana bread with the last semi-sweet chocolate chips I got on my last trip to Trader Joe’s.

My mom proclaims it “OK” but I actually don’t try it until this morning – it more than “OK”, it’s awesome!

I did another 48hrs fast this weekend, I plan on doing once every month but keeping it low key and unfussy – I probably won’t mention it again. I don’t want it to become a big to-do.

Women are persons

It’s International Women’s Day, today is the 100th anniversary.

This year’s theme is ‘Equal rights, equal opportunity: Progress for all’.

One day, in a perfect world there’ll be no need for special days for a specific set of people.

On Longing

I’m having a bit of Olympics withdrawal, which is awkward because I’m one of those people who didn’t want the Olympics in this city to begin with.

Year on and year on, I developed a passionate aversion to the idea, as over a 1001 incidents convinced me that the games were wrong for the city.

I started coming around during the torch relays, people were energized, spirits soared and the games were inevitable.

By the time the torch reached Vancouver, I’d moved on to being a little excited.

And the rest… well… is history!

And while I wouldn’t want games back, I miss the euphoria and general happiness that surrounded it.

Life was a giant party then, and even going to work felt great.

On Monday (day after the closing ceremony), I got home from work, ate and rushed out again eager to capture… something…perhaps an afterglow?

It all seemed so quiet, the people were gone, the lines were naught and there were no cheers to be heard.

There were a few people, probably like me, walking around with a look of confused familiarity – like they remember when it used to be like this – but it was so much better yesterday.

Below are a few of the first of my ‘Olympics’ pictures, I’m still wading through them…

The People, They Are Everywhere!

An alternate title for this post is: ‘The day I did everything’ or ‘How to cram everything into a day’.

We woke up Saturday morning on day two of the Olympics to news of violent protests downtown.

I took a shower, got dressed and braved the pouring rain to go see the Olympic cauldron at Coal Harbour.

The area was PACKED! People were literally everywhere – you couldn’t take a step without bumping into someone.

Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in one place before.

It didn’t help that it was raining and there were umbrellas everywhere.

From there, it was the Canada Line to Olympic Village; again, it was line-ups and people.

Market Fish Market

I finally got to ride the Olympic Streetcar to Granville Island; it was too crowded and claustrophobic to really enjoy the ride.

I managed to take a few pictures though.

Granville Island… again, with the people and rain!

The first stop was the Swiss House, which was (say it with me…) jam-packed! But fun.

The Atlantic Canada House was next, then the Place de la Francophone, which was the most fun; there were tons of food, live entertainment and beautiful French people.

Aquabus

The best way to get back downtown avoiding the line-ups was either to walk or take the Aquabus. The Aquabus won.

We popped over to the Ferragamo Store on a ultra crowded Robson Street (which is closed to traffic), to take a look at the ‘Creations’ collection brought in especially for the Olympics.

The Creations collection are a  limited edition of historical shoes the designer created for the  stars (like Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner etc) , using the same designs and materials.

The  shoes are beautiful and magical; I almost convinced myself buying one of these shoes would be an investment.

Next stop was Holt Renfrew to meet the Canadian designers and wonder-twins Dean & Dan of the DSquared2.

They designed the celebrity costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games.

The event was surprisingly fun, again tons of people but everyone was well behaved and lovely, and the brothers were nice, friendly and pretty down-to-earth. Not at all how you’d imagine a fashion event.

Dinner later that night was a huge healthy salad.

Desserts were beautifully crafted and perfectly delectable macarons flown in from Paris, tres romantique – you’d think it was New Year’s or Valentine’s Day or something.

Let’s pretend this is what I wore because I haven’t gotten around to those pictures yet.

It’s pretty casual.

Today…

O Canada!

I got stuck behind the torch relay on my way to work this morning.

By the time I got to work, the torch had also reached Gastown.

Crowds poured out into the streets and cheered as the flames made its final run through the city.

I shot a little video, take a look;

Tomorrow…

Finally!

Inukshuk

The Olympics begin tomorrow.

Sumi Miga Quatchi - 2010 Olympics Mascot

It’s a little surreal, for as long as I’ve lived here it’s been the great imminent event that has eclipsed almost everything else.

I went for a little walk this afternoon during lunch and the city was abuzz with activity.

It’s like our population doubled overnight, there’re people everywhere!

2010 Olympic Mittens olympic mitten

The Olympic Torch is making its way downtown; I plan on seeing the relay tonight.

Hopefully it gets cold enough to wear my red mittens.
