One of the first things I did when I got to New York this time was ride the Staten Island Ferry.
This is one of the top recommendations of things to do in New York from travel guides/blogs.
And somehow, I managed not to do it every time I went to New York; I didn’t see the point of taking the ferry just for the sake of taking a ferry and it didn’t help that my modest knowledge of Staten Island was gleaned from watching mob movies.
I should have take the ferry sooner… because it’s awesome! the views are amazing!
It wasn’t exactly an ideal day for a leisurely ferry ride; it was cold and windy, and dark clouds formed over the horizon.
I wasn’t properly dressed for the weather (I obviously packed for Florida!), and this nice grandmotherly lady kept offering me her shawl.
On the Manhattan side, the ferry leaves from the bright and airy Whitehall terminal with its large windows offering stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and the city.
There’s no charge to ride the ferry, which is an added bonus – and it gets crowded too.
It isn’t a long ride; it takes about 25mins to reach Staten Island, there are magnificent views along the way; of Manhattan, the statue of liberty, the waterscape and the views beyond.
I didn’t spend time on Staten Island, but you could… there are tons of stuff to do.
Here are a few more photos; hope you like them…
