Maker Person
I have a passionate aspiration to make my own things; I always have.
I admire women who effortlessly make everything from scratch.
My friend Akua recently had a baby; she and her husband took a woodworking class, built a crib, rocking chair and tiny baby furniture. She makes clothes from repurposed vintage fabrics and makes her own soy milk and yoghurt.
Obviously, I want her life – if only I could be that innovative.
I get such joy and inspiration from the little projects, even though I don’t always finish them.
Last weekend my mom and I went shopping for fabrics, I’ve decided that I’m going to make my own clothes.
We made some pillowcases the other day and it felt great! It turned out pretty and I didn’t have to spend a fortune.
Sadly, I don’t know how to sew, but I’m going to learn… after the Olympics when we can move about freely again.
I bought some patterns, I’m subscribed to a few sewing blogs and I’ve just discovered the most awesome fabric store.
I’m going to take a stab (with my mom’s help of course) at sewing my very first dress, and that’s even before I start my sewing lessons!
I’m thinking a simple dress like the one worn here, it doesn’t require sleeves and doesn’t seem complicated.
I imagine I can get into the complex stuff once I take a few lessons.
I’d love to be able to showcase my creations.
I’m going to sew dainty summer dresses of joy!
You just wait and see!
